How many villages are there in Acre?: In the state of Acre, located in the northern region of Brazil, there is a significant indigenous presence spread across several villages. According to information from the Extraordinary Secretariat for Indigenous Peoples (Sepi), Acre is home to 246 villages spread across 36 indigenous lands, which together account for approximately 14% of the state’s territory, totaling around 2.4 million hectares of preserved forest.
These lands are inhabited by a growing indigenous population. Data from the 2022 Demographic Census indicates that the number of indigenous people in Acre will increase from 17,578 in 2010 to 31,694 in 2022, representing a growth of 80.3%. Of this total, 61.79% live on indigenous lands, while 38.21% live outside them.
The ethnic diversity in Acre is remarkable, with the presence of 18 indigenous peoples, including ethnic groups such as the Huni Kuin (Kaxinawá), Ashaninka, Yawanawá, Shanenawa, among others. These peoples keep their cultures, languages and traditions alive, contributing to the state’s cultural wealth.
How many villages are there in Acre?: The distribution of villages is not uniform; some municipalities concentrate a significant portion of the indigenous population. Feijó, Santa Rosa do Purus, Manoel Urbano, Jordão and Tarauacá together are home to around 68% of Acre’s indigenous people. For example, Feijó has 32 villages with approximately 4,200 inhabitants from various ethnic groups, while Jordão also has 32 villages, totaling around 2,400 indigenous people.
